Haitian FREE Thinkers (HFT) was started on January 12, 2012 by founder Réginald Bien-Aimé. The date was chosen as a symbolic act of solidarity in memorial of the devastating earthquake that hit the island nation of Haiti on January 12, 2010.
Réginald attended the Southeast Regional Atheist Meet as a member of the Florida Atheists and Secular Humanists (FLASH) in 2011 where he was inspired to start a group that focused on finding like-minded Haitians wherever he could find them.
After careful consideration, the name "Haitian FREE Thinkers" was chosen and Facebook was the primary platform used to find fellow non-believers. The original goal was to find 10 secular Haitians. HFT has surpassed that humble goal and now has hundreds of members from all over the world.
HFT has evolved over the years but it has found a niche in the secular community. The group continues to grow as a very dynamic and vital group that serves as a place where secular Haitians and non-Haitian friends can gather on and off line to socialize and exchange ideas.
